The Greens hosted the Weald at the Filed of Dreams on Wednesday in the Sussex League. Worthing welcomed a number of players from injury and this strengthened the squad for what was always going to be a tough encounter as in September the Weald had narrowly beaten the Blues in the NatWest competition.
The visitors were not at full strength and this certainly contributed to the performance but take nothing away from the Greens on the day they were the better side.
Worthing scored five tries in total all different and of merit. Tomlinson ran a delicious line off the break from Sbuttoni, Bradley went over from another strong run, Mason benefited from some excellent team work. Hammond carried hard all day and bulldozed over while Sbuttoni carried 50m down the right hand touch line to score.
Sanderson brought the kicking boots and hit 4 from 5 to take the score up to 33-3. The Weald continued to challenge and the result was on reflection slightly unfair on them. Their reward came with the final play of the game as multi phase pressure finally breached the Greens line to make the final score 33-8.
Coach Young of the Greens said of the performance “The boys were very good today. They worked incredibly hard and the things we have been working on in training are really coming into game play.” He continued “Any number of boys could have been MoM today but Sanderson’s distribution, kicking and fast feet won the day.”
The Greens have a couple of weeks rest now before their fixtures pick up again. Plenty of time to review and build on another strong performance.
