Worthing College vs Collyers – U19 Sussex Cup Final

Worthing were looking to secure the County Cup for the 3rd consecutive year as they took on Collyers College on Friday 5th May.

Worthing started on the front foot dominating possession. Lucy Steel was the first person to get her name on the team sheet from a corner when a header from Annie was blocked and it fell to Lucy who flicked the ball nicely over the keeper. Worthing carried on to put Collyers under pressure and the second goal came from Linda Robart from a nice ball from out wide and she slotted it calmly passed the keeper. After some nice play and a lot of threatening attacks, Worthing had their third goal and a first goal from Sara Tubby who powered a header into the back of the net from a well delivered Beth Roe corner. Collyers looked to try and put pressure on Worthing when their centre midfielder picked a very nice pass to their striker but the ball was calmly defended from Beth who played some nice football with Holly Clarke, Abi Mason and Jacqui the goal keeper. Combination play over the whole pitch led to Valentine to get her name on the score sheet when Annie passed the ball through to Valentine who calmly finished. Worthing weren’t done yet and they were in no time 5-0 up before half time when Annie picked up a loose ball in midfield and after some nice play centrally with Holly, Sara and Valentine, she drove from midfield at the keeper lifting it over to make it 5.

Second half Worthing came out with the same mentality as the first half. Collyers had also changed mentality when they tried to put a lot of pressure on Worthing’s defence but some solid play from Beth, Abi and Holly ensured there was no issues for Molly the goal keeper who had been brought on at half time. Worthing had luck again from a corner and it was Valentine who was there to meet the ball and tap it home. Sara was next to add to her list of goals and was quick to make it 7 and her second of the game. Lucy Paine made her appearance for the College and made no mistake to put her name on the score sheet as Valentine found her in the 18 yard box and Lucy managed to beat the keeper with no pressure. Worthing kept dominant and before no time it was Beth Roe who added to the goals when she made an incredible darting run forward, Sara managed to find the run of Beth who powered it passed the keeper. Some good play again from Worthing involving Millie, Brooke, Holly, Abi and Beth. Valentine was first to grab her hat-trick when Annie lifted the ball through to V who took a touch and drove with the ball, taking it past the Collyers goal keeper and slotting it home. Millie Carter was next on the score sheet when Valentine passed the ball through to her and she made no mistake to finish. After a good spell of possession starting from Molly and working it’s way all the way up the pitch, Sara was the second player to grab a hat-trick when a lofted ball came to her outside the 18yard box, the striker made no mistake to volley the ball past the keeper, an incredible goal to seal her hat-trick as it powered into the left hand corner. A great team effort from Worthing and a great way to retain the County Cup.

Worthing started the first half quick, keeping the ball well but not really threatening the Barking defence. After roughly 20 minutes Worthing broke the deadlock when Valentine played a well weighted pass into the path of Sara who laced the ball bottom left corner. After a promising attack, Worthing got themselves a corner near the end of the half. Beth produced a quality ball which landed straight onto the head of Annie who powered it home to give them a 2 goal lead going into halftime. The Worthing defence were not really threatened in the first half, due to a solid display from the back 3.

The second half started and Barking came full force, however Worthing’s back 3 kept calm and continued to stop any real attacks forming. After a nice set of passing play, Beth slotted a neat pass between the Barking centre backs, leaving Sara 1v1 with the keeper, where she calmly poked it home. Sara then rounded off her hat trick 10 minutes later, when a confusion between the centre back left her able to put another away, as the keeper failed to clear the ball. After another good spell of possession, the ball found Sara, when she stroked the ball just inside the area and it bounced off the keepers face and went in. Annie rounded off another good performance by Worthing, by intercepting a back pass to the Barking keeper, slotting it past to give Worthing a strong 6-0 win. Great performance by the team and a good end to the league.
