Another long road trip for Worthing College netball 1st team – this time in the prestigious AOC National Cup semi final away to Bishop Burton College in Hull.
The girls plus Tina, Sarah and our wonderful minibus driver Colin travelled up on Tuesday evening, and 6 hours later we arrived at the Travelodge in Doncaster to rest up for the match the next day.
A breakfast stop and birthday celebrations for Tina in the morning put everyone in good spirits and we drove the final half an hour to Bishop Burton College – the setting, surroundings and facilities there were incredible to say the least.
After a good warm up the girls started off very well with Iona intercepting the first ball setting the scene for the rest of the match! Full court defensive pressure by everyone made it very difficult for Bishop Burton to get into their stride and with some lovely shooting from Betsy, Worthing won the first qtr 15-3. The second quarter continued in the same manner with Iona, Charlotte and Eli so strong in defence turning over numerous balls. The attack of Betsy, Livi, Grace and Bethen were linking up well creating lots of chances, shooting well and a half time lead of 30-7.
Lexie was introduced at wa in the 3rd quarter and she got out well at centre passes with some good feeds into the 2 shooters. Worthing continued to dominate the play with Bishop Burton making lots of changes to try and improve their situation. The girls were relentless and chased down every loose ball not giving an inch – 3 qtr time was 43-11. The final quarter the pressure was off and the girls enjoyed the final quarter knowing they would be reaching the final – 64-16 the final score.
Coach Tina Price was delighted with all of the team’s performance and it was well worth the long trip to Hull on her birthday!
The girls will now face Barking Abbey in the National Cup Final on Wednesday 1st May at Birmingham University. This is a few days after they represent the South East at the AOC National Championship Finals weekend at Nottingham University playing against the other 8 region winners in the Country. What a season they are having!
