Worthing College netballers travelled to Chichester University to play in the AOC South East tournament, the winners getting to play in the National AOC Finals.
First match the girls played Woking, they started playing at a high intensity with all 10 girls getting court time – winning 20-2. Second up were Brockenhurst, the girls continued to play well with some excellent shooting especially by Phillippa – 18-2 to Worthing.
Strodes College were our next opponents – some superb defence by Iona, Charlotte and Kira enabled us to get an early lead never looking back – 27-0 to Worthing.
The next group match was against Peter Symonds – the current champions and the 3rd time we have played them this season. The match went goal for goal with some excellent play by both teams. Phillippa and Bethen were shooting superbly and a crucial interception by Kira enabled Worthing to take the lead. Great feeding by Cally and Liv meant that Worthing took the win – 13-10.
Collyers were the next opponents and proved to be a tough opposition. 4-4 at half time coach Tina switched Ashlene into the wa position who made an instant impact driving out well and feeding the ball straight into the circle, final score 10-6.
The semi final was against Itchen College who had a strong team. The Worthing girls stuck to their game plan of constant pressure down the court and in the first half took a lead of 5-3. In the second half the girls continued to shoot and defend well – final score 11-8 to Worthing.
The final was against Peter Symonds again and what a close game it was. Symonds started off well and took a 4 goal lead at half time. Coach Tina gave a final pep talk to her girls and introduced Livvy into centre. Immediately Charlotte got a crucial interception which we scored from, 2 down. A mistake by Symonds enabled Worthing to capitalise again, scores level. Constant pressure from the Worthing team forced another turnover which Iona grabbed and Bethen scored. Two up with 30 seconds to play, Symonds scored in the final seconds but Worthing won the final 12-11!!
Coach Tina Price was delighted with the whole squad’s performance throughout the day especially as this is the first time the netballers have won this tournament. The team now play in the National AOC Finals at Nottingham University representing the South East on April 21st/22nd.
Player of the tournament – Phillippa Kennedy – stepped in for the injured Shelby and played superbly in every match.
