The Greens travelled to Hove RFC for the friendly training fixture against Buckswood from Hastings on Wednesday afternoon.
The weather was warm and the pitch firm as the two sides met to play twelve aside (allowing more time on the ball and space to work in). The score was of no consequence in this encounter, getting minutes for all involved the being the aim and achieved it was.
The Greens had much the better of the opening minutes playing some excellent multi phase rugby moving the ball deep into opposition territory. Unfortunately a stray pass found its way into the hands of Buckswood centre and he went the distance.
More great build up play from Worthing followed, every player contributed to the quick two man ruck ball and this challenged the Bucks defence repeatedly without the end result.
Tozer, Turner, Magee, Ward, Akram all challenged with their ball carrying and scrum work but it was Leete of the forwards that challenged the opposition the most making a number of line breaks and offloads. HIs work was strong in defence as well which is pleasing to see on his return from injury.
In the backs, Banister was causing all sorts of issues for the defence, Garrett was moving the ball effectively from the base, Battle-Welch, Mcdonald-Rodriguez and Day all made multiple tackles and carries. However it was the returning Lean that was back of the day. Running strongly with the ball he was a constant threat, possibly not to the degree Banister was but his overall contribution in defence could not be overlooked. Countless last man tackles created a real contest for the breaking carriers.
In all the Green performers were brilliant in application, deficits in execution could be put down to excellent pressure from the opposition but also fatigue on a large pitch in unseasonably warm conditions! The 8 tries to 6 deficit bothered not one player as the aim of getting more rugby for all was completely achieved and all are better off for it.
Top effort from all.
