Worthing College women’s football squad hosted SGS College in the semi final of the ESFA U18 National Cup at Worthing FC. This is the first time the girls have reached this stage of the competition and they knew it would be a tough match. SGS had some top quality players and it took Worthing a while to settle. They held SGS to 0-0 with some good defensive play in the first part of the match but then 4 errors led to 4 quick goals for SGS. Half time was 4-0.
The second half did not start well for Worthing as SGS scored again soon after the kick off. Worthing then decided they had nothing to lose and for the rest of the match played some excellent football. Niamh started the comeback with a great one on one with the gk scoring in the corner. This energised the team and the goals started to come with the team attacking the SGS goal. Niamh scored again and then completed her hatrick, the girls then knew they had a chance. Niamh scored her fourth goal with 10 minutes to go. The crowd were cheering Worthing on willing them to score again but it was not to be. Final score 5-4 to SGS.
Coach Amy Merricks was very proud of her team who never gave up and produced a brilliant second half performance against a very good SGS team.
