A wet and windy Worthing RFC played host to the local derby between Worthing College Greens and Steyning.
Going in to the match as underdogs the Greens went straight at it and made an impressive start pressuring the visitors line. A number of attempts to cross were thwarted even with the yellow card for Steyning. The door was just not open, the lock was not picked and the frame stood firm. Unfortunately the Greens were just not able to give the final pass or get the ball down when it was held up over the line resulting from more good defence by Steyning.
The rest of the first half was an incredibly tough contest with much of it being played in the Steyning half, but the Greens just couldn’t quite get over the line. With the last play of the half the visitors went over with a catch and drive line out to take a 7-0 lead.
The second half started with Steyning putting pressure on the Greens and scoring two quick converted tries. With the Greens 21-0 down there was no thought of giving up and a number of promising Green attacks faulted with a defensive pressure.
Steering started putting the Greens under more pressure but the best moment of the match was still to come. Ryan Macmillan first stepped off his left foot, took the outside and then cut off the right and cruised under the horns for the 5 points.
At the end of the game the positives were the forward dominance at set piece and the ability of the backs to challenge the defence when moving the ball.
MoM: Oli Fielder- good metres off the boot and strong carries.
