Solihull College vs Worthing College, Semi Final of National Cup. 1-1 (normal time, Valentine Pursey scoring) Worthing College win 5-4 on penalties.
In the first half Worthing started off well, keeping a solid defensive shape, forcing Solihull to try and play the ball over the top. When we won the ball back, we tried to play the ball over the top to our forward, to try and get her through on goal. Solihull eventually managed to break through our defence and placed the ball past Molly to make it 1-0. From our centre we laid the ball back to Dan who played the ball over the top, allowing us to win a throw, in the attacking third. The ball was thrown in towards the goal, Annie was placed just outside the 18 yard box. She then played it across to Sara, who laid it in for V, who then took a touch, and drilled the ball passed the keeper to level the game 1-1.
The second half started and we started very strong, creating a handful of chances. Again Solihull really struggled to break down our defensive shape, and resorted to changing their shape to 3-5-2 to put more pressure on our defence. We won a free kick just inside the Solihull half, allowing Amelia to play a looping free kick into the 18 yard box. Annie managed to get her head on it, but it just went wide of the post. Solihull also came close near the end of the half shooting from outside the box. Dan managed to get a boot on it to deflect it over the bar. We had a couple more chances right at the end winning a corner. The ball was played in towards Emily, who’s header was blocked inside the box and scrambled to safety by the Solihull defence. The last chance of the half came to Solihull who really pressed our defence and took a deflected shot which went out for a corner. The ref then blew the whistle to take the game to penalties.
Solihull chose to take the first penalty, slotting in calmly passed Molly putting them 1 up. V stepped up to take our first penalty and placed it straight into the bottom right corner, just passed the keeper. Solihull missed their second penalty blasting it straight down the centre into Molly’s path, where she palmed it away. Sara took the next Worthing penalty, powering it into the left hand side of the goal, well away from the keeper putting us 2-1 up. Solihull scored their next penalty going for placement rather than power. Amelia stepped up to take our third penalty placing it into the bottom right corner easily beating the keeper keeping us up by 1. Solihull scored once again to level us, but Annie took the 4th penalty powering the ball calmly into the bottom left, no chance for the keeper. Solihull scored their final penalty giving us the opportunity to win on the 5th penalty. Emily took it, but it was just saved by the keeper taking it to sudden death. Solihull tried to blast the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal, but Molly dived the right way and produced a great save, again giving us the opportunity to win. Dan stepped up to win the game for us, easily placing the ball past the keeper, to send Worthing to the National Cup final on Wed 5th May.
