WORTHING COLLEGE WOMEN’S RUGBY V COLLYERS – A – W 29-5

Collyers 5 – Worthing 24

Two tries for Dolly Culver, and a woman of the match performance from Chanel Jackman-Hills gets Worthing’s season back on track

The weather was finally kind for Worthing, who have been waiting for this fixture for the last three weeks, as poor weather has rescheduled the fixture. A solid start from  Worthing, meant Collyers were under pressure from the start, with some great recycling. The first opening came when Charlotte Williams and Abbi Downham combined well to put Jasmine Spalding sprinting down the wing to score under the posts.

A great passage of play from Collyers, saw Worthing put in a defensive shift, most notably Alex Allen, who eventually turned over the ball for Chanel Jackman-Hills to put Dolly Culver, over for her 1st of 2 tries.

A final push from Worthing before the half time whistle again saw Worthing, drive up the pitch, with firstly a well worked move shooting Charlotte Paynter up the wing, and then some neat passing to the other touchline, putting Dolly Culver in for her second. Abbi Downham scoring with the conversion to make it 17-0.

The second half saw an all changed Worthing side, with the more experienced players moving aside. It was much of the same from the start with Worthing putting in a great defensive display, especially from Valencia Alex and Gabbie Rudrum. Some constant pressure from Collyers, was everuallty halted, when Ani May put in a great hit, for them to knock on. Rather than wait for the scrum, Worthing attacked from their own 22, which saw some neat hands from Jessica Nicholas to put Chanel Jackman-Hills racing down the full length of the pitch to score under the posts (Abbi Downham scoring the conversion 24-0).

With the time ticking slowly away, it was eventually Collyers who broke the deadlock, to score a great individual try just before full time.  A loose kick, down the middle of the pitch, was not chased quickly enough, where Collyers attacked a broken defence to score under the posts.

Hard work in training and a repeat of this good form will be needed next week as Worthing look to play another fixture away from home.
