The Greens took the trip up to Reigate on an unusually sunny Wednesday afternoon to play the AoC Plate last 16 game.
Playing down the hill on a heavy pitch the Greens struggled to get into any attacking rhythm against a robust and enthusiastic Reigate side. Early kicking was not as effective as hoped for and the powerful opposition back three were able to ask questions of the Green defence as a result. Standing firm and building in confidence Worthing became more confident and started to develop phases of play gaining some success around the ruck area. However the over reliance on trying to attack one out from the break down played into the hands of the larger more physical Reigate side.
With most of the first half being scoreless it was obvious that the game was going to turn on only a handful of decisions, actions or moments. This proved to be the case as the Greens were able to keep a spirited attack from the home side out, a huge moment in the game!
Worthing took this as the catalyst to get into their stride and proceeded to work down the field, putting phases together they pressured the home line, with Cam Luke finishing well wide on the right. Sanderson was unable to convert Greens 5-0 up.
A brief period of pressure form the home side followed with a penalty shot going just wide but a well executed exit cleared all danger.
Greens 5-0 up at the half.
The second half saw a shift in the match with the Greens having much more possession and territory than Reigate, this pressure began to tell towards the final 15mins. In this period of the game Worthing had near total dominance at the set piece, stringing plentiful phases together the contest only stopped from being a rout by heroic defending and some average decision making on attack.
But there were two break throughs in the final 10mins with Alex Bosley and Hayden Scott crossing both converted by Sanderson to make it 19-0 Worthing.
May strong performances from individuals but as a team it was pleasing to see the work at the breakdown giving no penalties away during the entire match. A strong defensive effort not conceding any points and scoring three tries ourselves are obviously areas to be proud of.
Well done and on into the National Plate 1/4 finals.
