National premier Cup VS JMA
Worthing College 4-2 John Madejski Academy.
Goal scorers: Annie Rolf, Valentine Pursey, Sara Tubby, Hayley Bridge
Player of the match: Rebekah Dunt.
Worthing began the game well, limiting Reading’s chances through good team shape and hard work. Good pressure inside Worthing’s defensive half created the chance for a counter attack through a long ball to put Sara Tubby one v one with the full back before playing the ball into Hayley Bridge who found Annie Rolf, she took it past the last defender to slot it past the keeper to make it 1-0.
Worthing put up a solid defensively display for the remainder of the first half leading to Reading’s only chances coming from long range efforts. Worthing’s persistent hard work paid off as Danielle Rowe played a chipped through ball into Valentine Pursey finding herself 1 v 1 with the keeper before calmly finishing to make it 2-0.
As half time approached Worthing kept the game tight with constant pressure in their defensive half and created a chance of their own from a corner which found Amelia Ritchie’s header fall just wide of the post.
Half time 2-0 to Worthing.
Worthing started slower in the second half as Reading had majority of possession, however Worthing kept their good shape minimising their chances to long range shots. As Worthing regained possession, a well-weighted through ball from Dan Rowe put Hayley Bridge 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper who slotted the ball in the bottom left corner 3-0.
Reading continued with possession in their own half and wide areas but failed to test the Worthing goal, until their first long range effort caught the goalkeeper off guard looping into the top of the net, 3-1. Soon after this a similar shot from Reading’s midfielder hit the crossbar and deflected into the net, making the score 3-2 bringing Reading back into the game. After Reading’s two goals Worthing kept the ball well creating more chances in behind Reading’s defence. This eventually led to a opportunity for Sara Tubby to wrap up the game after intercepting a Reading back pass, finishing neatly into the goal. Worthing kept their good shape for the remainder of the game denying Reading any more opportunities. This put Worthing through to the quarter finals in the cup.
