WORTHING COLLEGE NETBALL SQUADS V SOUTH DOWNS – A – W 17-7 & 45-8

This Wednesday saw the Worthing squad visit South Downs College in Waterlooville minus Katy Begley who had been selected to represent England U19 in an International Competition in Georgia. Due to illness, we only had a squad of 15 for two games but were upbeat and looking forward to playing indoors.

First team were asked to  play first and I had decided to change the formation to give both teams the opportunity of winning, rather than moving one of the 2nd team shooters to the first team. This led to a slow start in terms of scoring but our on court defensive play was brilliant, everyone working extremely hard, but the standout player was Sophie Quache who got at least 6 interceptions in the first 10 mins. This gave us a first quarter lead of 5-2, a swap of Beth Watson to GS and Laura Mc to GA proved the right one as this worked better, defensively we were sound and the work rate of Sophie and Gemma in centre court was excellent. Half time score 11-5.

We then took the game away and the result was never in doubt, winning 22-9.

The new fitness plan in the netball academy appears to be working, Southdowns had a very good GD but she was unable to keep tight on our GA, something the girls all recognised. MOM Sophie Quache

Bring on fitness Friday.

2nd team took to the court with a slightly weakened team with Lucy Hawkins having been moved to the first team however they were really up for the game. Worthing got off to a flying start with outstanding shooting from Charlotte Lloyd and Yasmin Payne, Yasmin’s work on court too was excellent. Chyna’s defensive work as a C also paid dividends and Ruth was excellent at WD. Charlotte Lay’s feeding into the circle was good and  to be fair Emily and Rebecca in defense didn’t have too much to do, but when they did they did it extremely well ensuring interceptions were successfully passed out. Conceding 8 goals in 40 mins girls, excellent work and scoring 45 in the same amount of time excellent. Maddie Wand came on at half time and the girls maintained their fluent play, some of which was a pleasure to watch.

MOM Yasmin Payne

Excellent start to the New Year from both teams despite missing key players.

Well done girls
