After the National Schools at the weekend and an outstanding performance from the girls that went, the girls came down to earth with a bang at Alton. Granted it was a long journey in a full mini bus but !!!

No excuses for the first team as they were at full strength when they took to the court against a much improved Alton team, however we never got going – losing the first 4 goals of the quarter before scoring our first. Chloe York then turned her ankle which meant that Lucy (who was due to start for the 2nd team) had to replace her. Poor passing, pace and decision making saw the first quarter end 8-3 to Alton.

Changes made at quarter time and some harsh words from me and we started to get our game together, much more effort from the girls and the ball was getting in the circle and shots were going in. We overcame the 5 goal deficit and ended the half 13-11 up. Yes thought the coach but we lost the next three centre passes and Alton took the lead again for us to fight back and finish the third quarter 18-17 up.

Start of the fourth quarter was worse than the third – Alton took the lead by 3 goals and we were on the back foot. With 2 mins left to go we were still down by 3 but a good interception by Laura in the circle and we pulled 1 goal back, scored off our centre to leave us one down. Fortunately Alton threw the ball away and it was all square. In the last 10 seconds we had 3 attempts to win the game but failed to score. 24-24 Final Score.

An extremely disappointing performance.

Second Team were not at full strength as neither Charlotte Lay or Charlotte Lloyd could play and having used Lucy in the first team, the 2nd team were left with 7 players. Alton had a GS who was over 6ft so Emily had her work cut out at GK but did very well and learnt a lot from the game. Yasmin Payne worked tirelessly at GA and her shooting was excellent however our attack was lacking change of pace and direction and this proved costly. Ruth Wenyeve gave it her all as usual at WD and Rebecca and Chyna played half game each at C and GD as the team lacked a natural C. The girls never gave up and on three occasions got the difference back to one goal but the game was lost really in the first quarter when Alton took a three goal lead which we were unable to get back. Second half of the game was 12 -12.

Final score 26-22 to Alton
