WORTHING COLLEGE WOMEN’S FOOTBALL 1ST TEAM – A – DREW 3-3

Merrist Wood v Worthing College – ECFA Premier League.
Worthing started the brighter of the two teams with good possession which soon paid off when Niamh Andersson’s through ball split the defence finding Valentine Pursey who connected with the pass, and after her the first attempt being saved she got the rebound with a half volley making it 1-0. Merrist Wood reacted and increased the pressure on the Worthing defence but found it hard to break them down. However the equaliser came when a Merrist Wood corner found their striker in the box who headed it in, 1-1. The home team then took the lead making it 2-1 after linking up down their left side resulting in Merrist Wood shooting and beating Worthing’s goalkeeper finding the back of the net. Worthing responded creating chances with some 1v1’s with the keeper which could not be converted. Nearing the end of the second half Worthing were looking dangerous and proved this by a well worked goal involving Steel, Pursey and Bridge who flicked the ball through the defence to Jodie Pallant who was well positioned to finish in the bottom left hand corner. Both teams went in to half time even at 2-2.

The second half Worthing started slower and Merrist Wood found the back of the net within 10 minutes from another corner. Conceding an early goal gave Worthing a boost and they were soon dominating play again with some great link up play through the thirds. Valentine was found and managed to work the ball off of Bridge who then set back for Rolf to play through to Niamh Andersson’s path to break the back four, Niamh managed to beat the keeper to make it 3-3.
Worthing had possession during the rest of the second half pressing high and making Merrist Wood nervous to play out, Hayley Bridge made a fantastic movement to spin her defender and pick up a through ball which just glimpsed wide. Worthing threatened again when Valentine picked the ball up on the edge of the box to strike and hit the cross bar, Lucy Steel followed it up with Annie Rolf on a tap in but the officials disallowed the goal for offside.
Despite Worthings efforts to take 3 points they came away with just 1 but a positive performance to take away.
FT 3-3
