Following on from the success of the Hampshire Versatility Tournament last Wednesday, The Netball Academy were in high spirits travelling to Brockenhurst College for the annual Hampshire Invitation Tournament. Spring was in the air and in the forest with blossom on the trees and daffodils in abundance, sun shining and ponies everywhere.
First game was Worthing 2 playing Itchen 2, a tense affair, with numerous missed opportunities to take a strong lead but one which Worthing eventually sorted themselves out to win 4-3.
Second Game Worthing 1 playing Brockenhurst – the only team in Hampshire to beat us this year, Worthing got off to a good start playing good netball and taking an early 5 goal lead. Brock complained about the ball, which was swapped, which annoyed the Worthing players as it’s against the rules, and this led to lack of concentration and allowing Brock back into the game. The final 6 mins of the game went goal for goal with Worthing coming out 19-18 winners.
Third game Worthing 2 v QMC college, Worthing got into a good early lead only for Ella Forrest to turn her ankle, the opposition sportingly agreed that one of the first team could take her place as we had no subs. This inspired the girls and they ran out easy winners 11-2
Fourth game Worthing 1 v Symonds – Always a good encounter as both teams play clean netball, Katy Begley held extremely well in this game and the feeding into the circle improved. This was literally a game that went goal for goal the whole game with Worthing wining 23-22, much to the Symonds coaches annoyance – third time we have beaten them this season!
Fifth game Worthing 2 v HCS – Probably the girls best game of the day, HCS had won both their previous games, one of them against Peter Symonds, the netball flowed but the goals failed to go in but the defense remained strong and Worthing ran out winners 5-3.
Sixth game Worthing 1 v Itchen – Itchen College were much improved from the team we thrashed here earlier in the season and although they had lost by 1 to Symonds, beating us put it three teams on one loss. All to play for Worthing took a one goal lead early on but failed to capitalise on numerous chances to increase that lead. Worthing went two goals up in the second half but Itchen came back time and time again – an extremely tense affair which Worthing won again by 1 21-20.
Seventh game Worthing 2 v Peter Symonds – For some reason Worthing 2 fell to bits early on in this game going 7 goals down without reply, despite encouragement from the 1st team, the score got worse and worse losing 23-3 – all in the heads sadly.
Eighth game Worthing 1 V QMC – Sadly this was never going to be a competitive game as QMC had been the whipping girls of the group – Worthing remained focused and completed the job 23-3 win
Ninth game Worthing 2 v Brock 2 – girls went into this one knowing they couldn’t now win the tournament and it was a very competitive affair which we lost 5-3.
Second week running Worthing 1 came away from Hampshire with the winners trophy.
Next week sees the final game of the season where a win will give the girls the Hampshire League
