An 7.30 depart meant an early start for the AASE girls rugby team, who ventured up to Filton College, to play against fellow AASE centres Filton and Brockenhurst.

Previous results against the teams earlier in the season meant it was 1 win and 1 loss against Brockenhurst and a draw against Filton College, so the girls knew that each game could go either way.

The first match saw Worthing against Filton A where for the first few minutes it was evenly poised. Filton A took the initative with an early break, with a certain try however the pace from Caroline H just caught the breakaway and Ashleigh S got the turnover to make a penalty for Worthing. The long kick and chase from the resulting penalty, meant the table turned with Worthing on the front foot. This followed by some great offloading skills by Harmony D to put Maddy B in the corner 7-0. Worthing scored again with some neat touch line to touch line with Gabie A scoring on her return to the 1st team. Gabie scored again moments later with a show and go to score under the posts just before half-term. Caroline continued the pressure on Filton with a great loop with Gabie to score and convert 22-0. Cruise control surely!!! However, it was the turn of Filton to bounce back scoring 18 unanswered points in the 2nd half! Worthing’s blushes were spared with the resulting full time whistle coming after Filton’s third. MoM – Gabie Archer

The second match saw Worthing come up against AASE rivals Brockenhurst. On a the 4g surface most suited to our game, Worthing didn’t disappoint with a convincing 39-5 win. Gabie started the scoring with a break through the middle to score under the posts, with Ashleigh getting the resulting conversation. Newbie Jasmine S was the next to get on the score sheet, with Charlotte W holding the inside shoulder of her defender to put Jasmine into the corner. Worthing continued their dominance with a well worked team try with great handling and feet, which resulted with Gabie offloading to Maddy to score under the posts. Brockenhurst were next to score with some decent offloading which Worthing struggling to defend. The next score was the moment of the match with firstly saw some great ball carrying by Charlotte G, Elise P to pop up to Jasmine who stormed through to look like a certain score, however a last ditch tackle took her down, for her to offload to Maddy to score under the posts with the resulting conversation. Back to the restart lead some great play to Ashleigh standing out on the wing to dodge 3 defenders and to run just inside of the touch line to score in the corner. Finally a try from Alex who ran an overs line, creating a break in Brockenhursts defensive structure scoring under the posts. MoM – Jasmine Spalding

The third match was the complete opposite of the first two games. Let’s just say we got a lesson in rugby from the Filton rematch. Final score a lot – 0. This coupled with an injury to Alex Allen meant the girls got back at 23.00! Not the best end to a day, however the two results before hand meant it will be interesting over the next few weeks, where we are bound to see Filton again in forthcoming 7s tournaments.
