Worthing travelled to Hurst late Monday afternoon to play the semi final of the Sussex County Cup. The girls were fully prepared for the encounter and up for the challenge of playing a team that had been moulded over years and well coached.
Game started extremely well for us, we took an early lead of 5-1 and appeared to have the game well under control. Alas this was not to be as Hurst came storming back to score the next 7 goals without reply. Their WA was dominating the game and Worthing were rattled by the physical nature of the Hurst side. We pulled it together a bit but the quarter ended 12-9 in Hurst favour. Our problems were centre court so changes made at quarter time and players coming on told what to do. The defensive partnership of Amelia & Lauren were working well but we struggled to get the ball down court. When the ball did get into the circle Katy’s shooting was on form. Half time score 23-17 Hurst. Further changes were made at half time and this combination stormed back into the game with Laura completely outplaying their WD and the shooters were getting more opportunities to score. Hurst GD was outstanding throughout and not adverse to the physical side of the game. The score at end of third quarter was 35-33.
Having pulled back 4 goals in that quarter we just had to carry on doing the same, 15 mins is a long time and it was our centre. Unfortunately Lauren had to leave the court through injury which did upset our defense. Having thrown our centre away Hurst took another 5 goal lead for us to peg back which we did. We had three opportunities in the final 2 mins to take the game to extra time but were unable to convert.
A disappointing result but for a neutral a great game to watch.
