A Super sporting week:
Worthing College had a strong representation at the AoC South East Championships in Badminton, Tennis singles, Rugby and Netball, and Worthing continued to show their sporting prowess in the remaining regional events last week. Men’s hockey pulled together a new but committed team competing against some of the top college teams resulting in two wins, one draw and two well fought losses. With two teams representing College in the tennis doubles, the boys battled through the rounds reaching the semi-finals. Our best result of the championships so far was in the pool. A team of eight took to the water with Will Jagger diving in to defend his 100m and 200m freestyle title and the remaining squad ready to show what they were made of. The team came up against some strong swimmers with a very good representation from Peter Symonds, who have shown dominance across many sports, Farnborough and Queen Mary’s. A fantastic effort by all the swimmers resulted in Will Jagger retaining his titles and Sophie Quach winning the 50m backstroke, both gaining their place at the National Championships in Bath representing South East. The men’s and women’s teams secured a well-deserved 3rd place in the overall standings.
The week concluded with our final efforts at qualifying in tennis. After a gruelling few matches for the singles and men’s doubles, our hopes rested with Helen Skingley and Jonathon Roberts. Travelling back up to Basingstoke for the third time, the doubles pair had a good chance. Having all teams win the majority of their first set of matches in the round robin tournament meant the statistics were mind boggling and the title was up for grabs. After fighting hard Helen and Jon came into their own beating their opponents from Peter Symonds and going through to represent the South East at Bath. But, Worthing College are not done yet. Due to bad weather the Men’s and Women’s football and Cross Country are yet to come in which we have three strong teams so watch this space for more sporting success.
