The Raiders went to Worth on a sunny Wednesday afternoon to play in the NatWest vase match. A depleted squad of 19 made the trip and were manful in their performance throughout.
Worthing started the slower and were under pressure from the start. Going quickly down 0-5. This sparked the visitors into action and only 3mins later the Raiders finished well on the right hand side after good build up play and vision from fly half Swart. Martin went over in the corner and it was well converted by Collier. Raiders 7-5 up.
Unfortunately Worth had a good period and placed great pressure on Worthing, this leading to a further 2 tries for the home team. Following this the Raiders rallied and scored one of their own from good build up play by the forwards with Hassan the beneficiary on this occasion. Raiders down 12-17 at the break.
The second half started much as the first with the home side taking great advantage of mistakes in the gold defence. Play was mainly between the two 22m lines and neither side created sustained periods of dominance. However the greater experience of the Worth side started to show and the gaps started to appear in the Raider defence.
With 5mins to play Worthing were trailing 12-32 but with an injection of tempo to the play the ball found its way to Seacombe on the right wing. He bumped his opposite man to the floor before sprinting 30m for his first touch down for the Raiders. 17-34.
Unfortunately another Raider turnover allowed Worth to finish the game with another unconverted try to make the final score 39-17.
Some notable performances from many players. Hassan, great leadership and carrying, Parkin had a huge impact when he entered the game both in terms of tackle count and work on the floor. Martin made numerous tackles as did Bryant both carrying well and being effective in the line out. Lee again lead from the front and Fow took his chance well on his first Raider start. Swart also made an impression at 10 in his first start there. Rigglesworth beat many defenders with ball in hand and defended well.
Unfortunately for this group of players at this point in their development Worth were too strong. Congratulations to Worth and good luck in the next round. Well worked to our players deputising and possibly making a case for Raiders jerseys in the future. To all of the Green players that came in, well done indeed.
Lets pick up again on Friday.
Tries: Martin, Hassan, Seacombe
Conversions: Collier 2
MOM: Bryant- great work over the ball
