Worthing College 2nd XV 0 Brockenhurst 1st XV 75

A tough lesson in Rugby for the Green squad.

The first round of the BCS cup saw the Greens drawn away to Brockenhurst first XV. A tough game saw the Greens lose heavily and be taught a lesson in pace and power from a strong team. Despite this the Greens showed endeavor and grit throughout the whole game. The first half started brightly with Worthing heaping pressure on the Brockenhurst line. A series of mistake though meant the pressure could not be converted into points. A swift move saw ‘Brock’ break and run the length of the pitch to score.

Unfortunately this pattern continued for the majority of the game and the score line would’ve been more if was not for some heroic tackling from some of the player. Elliot Reynolds was outstanding in defense throughout the match. At one point Elliot put in 3 tackles consecutively to snuff out a ‘Brock’ attack. Similarly, Jacob Parkin worked tirelessly to make tackles all game and be a real nuisance at the breakdown. This meant some of Brock’s flow was broken up and they were not able continue their attacks. Callum Morin was again showed how much dog and heart he has in making many cover tackles to stop Brock line breaks.

A strong series of attacks in the second half, with Richard Clarkson and Jacob Mogre carrying strongly, led Worthing in the Brock 22. After some good at the breakdown by Tom Young Worthing managed to get themselves over the line through another strong carry by Richard Clarkson, unfortunately the referee deemed it to be held up and a scrum was awarded. A mistake from the scrum meant a great opportunity was lost and after some missed tackles Worthing once again found themselves under their own posts.

The whole Worthing showed brilliant determination to stop their opponents, grit is something that cannot be coached and for this, they must be commended. Ultimately though tackling too high with poor technique will mean these tackles will be missed and defends beaten. A focus on this in training to match the will and grit, then the greens could be a real force to be reckoned with.. This game showed a massive improvement in defensive organization and grit from the first game. These set of tough games have set the Green squad up nicely for the up coming Sussex league where they will play local 1st and 2nd XV teams of a similar standard

MOM: Elliot Reynolds – Outstanding defense all game.
