Worthing hosted SEEVIC from Southend, Essex in the BCS Premier League. This was the first outing for the Raiders at U19 level and for some of the match it showed. SEEVIC started well and made inroads into the Raider defence. Putting pressure on the home side and managing to get the first score. Raiders worked hard to get themselves back into the match and started to create phases and build pressure of their own on the back of a dominant scrum. This allowed Beecham to score under the posts having beaten the defence. Converted by Gibson 7-5 Raiders.
The Raiders started to produce some pressure and made ground again based on pressuring at the scrum, although the line out was not functioning as well and SEEVIC were having joy in that department. The second half started with the Raiders having a brisk wind at their backs good for 15points, unfortunately only 12 of the 15 points would be scored in the half! Some good kicking led to field position and the line out catch and drive went deep into the visitors 22. This ending with a score from Raiders debutant Burger, this converted and it was 14-5 Raiders. More pressure was to follow and although the performance was not dominant the Raiders did manage another score this time through Hooker Gibson. No extras so the score remained 19-5 Raiders.
Then from the kick the SEEVIC side turned over the home team and scored, this being converted it was 19-12 Raiders. The game never really gained a pattern as both sides failed to hang onto the ball and build pressure on the opposition. This was to be the down fall for the Raiders as a well worked try in the corner was expertly converted from the touch line by the impressive SEEVIC 10 this making the score 19-19.
This was the final score and although both sides looked to complete the match with a score it was not to be. Final score 19-19. A good tough and abrasive first outing for the Raiders and plenty more to come. SEEVIC will be a touch unit to crack at Southend in the new year but another excellent encounter between the two sides. Tries: Beecham, Burger, Giibson Conversions: Gibson 2 MOM: Rob Fogerty
