Worthing College Rugby Trial impresses Coaches

Worthing College (@WorthingCollege @WorthingSport) held the first of two trials for the upcoming 2014- 2015 season last Wednesday at Worthing RFC. The home of the Worthing Raiders (@WorthingRaiders) hosted players from various schools and Clubs in the local area as well as from as far afield as Kent and The Netherlands. Fifty three students arrived to trial in cool and wet conditions but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for exciting and ambitious rugby. The level of play considering the conditions was good and coach Sam Hewick said “There was some real talent on show, playing some really good rugby.” “We are really looking forward to working with these students, the work ethic shown in the Booster sessions in February and March was excellent.” So with such a positive start what next? Ben Coulson lead on the rugby programme at Worthing College said “We are all very excited now for the second trial on April 30th.” “There are going to be some tough decisions to make and there may well be some disappointed players when the final decisions are made.” Coulson went on to say “This being said there is still plenty of time for people to make an impact as all areas of progress are being looked at. Those trialling can help their chances by upping their physical fitness and core rugby skills. We like to play an ambitious style of rugby so getting round the pitch and being comfortable on the ball are vital.” It appears there will be some real pressure on the existing students to get back into one of the two squads. “From a coaches point of view” said Hewick “it’s great to see so much competition, it will raise standards. Players realise without being told that it is highly competitive and that they are under pressure to perform.” Exciting times then for the programme at the half way point of the trials process. The second helping is on April 30th at Worthing RFC we look forward to seeing you there.
