Worthing College Rugby Students Get County Recognition
Congratulations to Alex Masham, Hassan Hassan, Cassius Deschamps, Rob Foggerty and Tom Dougherty who have recently been selected to represent Sussex Rugby U17’s. They are all first years at Worthing College and part of the College’s Rugby Academy of Sport programme.
The boys have been working very hard to improve their skills through college coaches Ben Coulson(coach at Worthing Raiders) and Sam Hewick ( Raiders first team player). The new gym at the Worthing College Campus has also helped the boys with their strength and conditioning. Coulson commented saying: ‘The students have worked really hard, they’re always putting in 100% in training and games and this hard work has paid off with their selection to the Sussex squads’. Hewick added to this: ‘The boys have really bought into the conditioning side of things we have tried to push this year. With the new gym the students have really worked hard in there to improve their strength and power. It is something I’ve been really impressed with, and their hard work has paid off’.
The U17 county squad enables progression into the U18 squad where the students will get an opportunity to gain selection for the London & South East divisional squad which could lead into the England U18 team. Coulson commented further saying: ‘this is where we want these players to be, challenging themselves against the best players in the country’. This level is where the Premiership clubs look for future players and scout talent. It seems that the hard work for the five students is just beginning! Everyone at the college wishes them luck.
