Worthing were playing SGS in the ECFA Elite League, Bristol. The game was a really tough encounter for the players certainly having 4 players from the first team missing made it the more impressive that we competed and at times were better than one of the best Academy set ups in the country.
We had to adjust quite a few positions around and the players took to their challenge and instruction seeing a real mental strength to prevent any real opportunities in the first half. We thought we had a penalty when Izzy Burt was pushed in the area after our attacking corner but the officials unfortunately didn’t see it. There were many half chances for both teams in the first half of which was a real even encounter.
Early in the second half Bristol scored two quick goals but Worthing’s bravery and steely determination didn’t waiver. After dealing with this initial onslaught they got themselves back into the game seeing Hayley Bridge and Chloe Lelliott going close after some good play to find them space in the penalty area. Worthing pressed hard and gambled throwing more players forward but could not score until late on when a well taken free kick from Burt found Owen directing the ball towards goal and from the resulting deflection Paige Adams poked the ball home.
It was disappointing to lose but one of the best focused, determined team displays of the season and they should be very proud of themselves.
Player of the match was Charlotte Owen, calm in possession and fierce in the tackle.
