The Worthing College Men’s Football Performance Programme 1st XI looked to start 2014 in a positive frame of mind with an ECFA National League game at home to SEEVIC. Due to the recent weather the game was moved to Waterhall’s 3G surface.
The game started fairly evenly with both sides squandering possession after the prolonged Christmas break, but it was the visitors who created the first chance with Worthing keeper Jimmy Punter making a great stop at the feet of the SEEVIC striker. This seemed to stir Worthing into life and passages of passing play began to be in evidence. Worthing then created the most clear cut chance of the game with Charlie Dennis taking on his full back and squaring the ball for Josh Marshall, who from 6 yards out blazed the ball over the SEEVIC bar.
Worthing took the lead midway through the first half from the penalty spot. Striker Luke Richards robbed his centre half opponent and slid in Dennis, who evaded the defenders challenge and rounded the keeper, only to be upended in the penalty area. Dennis stepped up and sent the SEEVIC keeper the wrong way. 1-0 Worthing.
The goal seemed to settle down Worthing, however SEEVIC always looked dangerous on the break and only solid defending from the Worthing back four and Punter kept their clean sheet. Worthing’s play was now becoming more fluid and Dennis found himself on the left when the ball fell to him on the half volley, which found the corner of the net from 20 yards out. 2-0 Worthing and that was the score at half time.
Into the second half and Worthing needed to get the third goal to kill the game as SEEVIC continued to give an honest account of themselves. It was that man again Dennis with probably the goal of the game taking the ball on his right foot and curling the ball into the top corner stanchion. 3-0. Worthing were now growing in confidence and it wasn’t too long before Worthing were 4 to the good. Richards delivered an exquisite cross field pass for Marshall, who drove the ball past the diving SEEVIC keeper. 4-0.
Dennis wasn’t finished though. He picked the ball up in the middle of the field and struck a shot from a full 30 yards out over the SEEVIC stopper 5-0. This allowed Worthing to change things up bringing on fresh legs. The scoring was completed when Harry Smith was played in by Dennis and Smith’s cross was converted by the hard working Richards. 6-0.
Punter still had to make a couple of excellent stops to keep the scoreline as it was and that’s how the scoring stayed until the final whistle.
Performance Coach Dave Hall was extremely pleased with the start to 2014 “SEEVIC are always a tough opponent and the game started extremely even. Even though it was clear that both sides were a bit rusty, we showed excellent attitude and application to get back to our fluid, passing game. The boys will be very proud of their performances today and now must take this confidence onto the rest of 2014.”
