Following on from the warmth of the indoor courts at the K2, it was my pleasure to take the girls football team to Southampton on Friday morning in the bitter cold. Worthing were one of the favourites to proceed through following on from their success of last year, but this is tournament football on very small pitches with even smaller goals. The morning started with a 2-0 win against a gritty Strodes College team, this was followed by wins against Bexhill and Sussex Downs. Group winners, we then played a Chichester team whose sole aim was to try and finish 0-0 and beat us on penalties, alas they were twarted with about 3 mins to play when Worthing scored, they went home, we marched on to find Itchen waiting for us in the semi final. Itchen were the team Worthing beat the year before in the final and had several class players in their midst. Up to this point Becky Simmonds had not let in a goal ! Worthing quickly went 1-0 up which then became 2-0 before we scored an own goal !. With less than a minute on the clock Itchen broke and Becky Simmonds went down bravely at the feet of their forward, getting an accidental kick in the head for her troubles. From the kick in Worthing scored a third to put them in the final against QMC. Despite a chat before kick off about they had won nothing yet, we really couldnt get going in this game despite our obvious advantage of very talented players, the game came and went, extra time came and went then the dreaded penalties. We had practices earlier in the day and the only two players to score were Becky Simmonds (GK) and Sophi Tribe (who had no confidence to take one). Becky stepped up first and missed the target. She then had to step into the goal where she saved the first one, Paula scored for Worthing, Becky saved the next one, Amy missed for Worthing, Becky saved the next one, Charlotte scored for Worthing, QMC had to score from the next one but again Becky saved and Worthing won the Regional Championships for the second year running.
Off to Bath to represent the South East in April
