Womens Football Performance Programme

The first team squad travelled to Solihull College and met a fantastic squad of players boasting 10 Birmingham centre of excellence players that had played together since they were 12, this was obvious in their play as from the kick off they completed a 15 pass move culminating in a shot at goal.

Worthing sensed the danger and set about their task with energy and determination but the power pace and technical ability of the opposition was causing problems added to that Rebecca Simmonds in goal sustained a knock on her shoulder, Solihull had several opportunities but were thwarted by some great saves and blocks by Worthing’s defence but unfortunately Worthing came in 2-0 down at the break with an added difficulty of Rebecca Simmonds unable to continue in goal after 20 minutes Jo Case had to bravely take up the gloves.  With a change in formation and a few adjustments at half time Worthing took the game to Solihull with Amy Green and Charlotte Owen bravely receiving the ball in midfield in an attempt to play some good football, unfortunately a strong Solihull defence and quick strike force enabled Solihull to find the spaces left as Worthing attempted a comeback and scored a further 3 goals in the second half.  This was real eye opener for the Worthing team of the level they need to attain this season, but you cannot knock their never say die attitude working hard for each other and concentrated throughout the entire game.

Player of the match Charlotte Owen always available for the ball and a driving force in midfield

2nd Team Away at Brockenhurts

Brockenhurst vs Worthing was shortened again to a 9vs9 due to injuries in the Worthing side. Having a strong squad but players from few positions was difficult in selecting a side. A new look formation was chosen to suit personnel and Worthing began the game showing great discipline with positions and individual roles. After creating multiple chances, the girls took a deserved lead through a tidy Caroline Hodgson finish, 15 minutes in.

With Worthing growing in confidence and quality as the game progressed, a second goal was vital to ensure a win. 5 minutes before half time, an unsurprising source of Chloe Johnson grabbed Worthings 2nd and a contender for goal of the season in the early months. After playing out from the goalkeeper, the move consisted of some neat interplay between Chloe, Caroline and Shercarla, as a reverse pass found Johnson through 1 vs 1, she wasn’t prepared to let the tight angle get the better of her as she whipped the ball round the keeper into the net from 20 yards. A deserved 2-0 lead at halftime. With no subs and a whole half ahead of them, Worthing came out in the second half with the same attitude and quickly added a 3rd after Caroline fired across to goalkeeper from 18 yards into the bottom corner.

3-0. The most important thing for the girls was to defend out a clean sheet for the remainder of the game and they did so after top performances from the back 4 of Chloe, Brooke, Maddy and Emily. A fourth goal was almost added after Caroline hit a wonder strike from 30 yards on the volley, only for it to hit the wrong side of the crossbar. The game ended 3-0 after an almost faultless performance from every individual in Worthing colours. An incredibly satisfied coach after the performance and result.

Goals – Caroline Hodgson(2), Chloe Johnson Player of the match – Chloe Johnson for her world class finish and an excellent performance at right wing back, not giving the opposition winger a sniff all game.

Well done girls!
