AASE Women’s Rugby 9th October

We arrived at the venue, emptying our bladders was top priority but then we got down business. Our first time playing sevens together or as a team at all, we outplayed Peter Symonds 25-0, with fancy footwork from our scrum half Ashleigh Smith as she sidestepped the opposing scrum half after after a terrific effort from the pack to win back the ball. Shortly after, Katie Phillips burst through the ever weakening defensive line to score under the posts. The centre partnership of Gabie Archer and Harmony Driver rediscovered some of their previous form after coming back form injury, including massive tackles and getting the ball out to Harriet Dunn where she scored under the sticks. Another player having an outstanding game was Heather Clegg as two tries were scored by breaking through the Peter Symonds defence.
For the next match we knew that we needed to step up a gear as Woking had a number of talented backs that were able to break the line. However, our defense was able to keep the pressure on, resulting in no tries being conceded.
Our pack, Charlotte Guest, Jemma Barnes and Emily Tilley, used all their strength to secure the ball in rucks and scrums resulting in a perfect attacking platform for Amy Martin to score her four tries out on the wing, what a ball hogger! With a final effort from everyone In the last few seconds of the game, Heather Clegg managed to escape the clasps of the Woking defenders, waddling over the line.
