Academy of Sport Round Up – 12.12.12

Worthing College Men and Women’s Football this week was frozen out due to the weather, however the Rugby and Basketball Performance Programmes enjoyed successful performances and results.  The Rugby Under 19 programme enjoyed a 73-0 victory against East Berkshire at Worthing Leisure Centre in the BCS Elite League.  Worthing were dominant throughout, which gave coach Ben Coulson the opportunity to give bench players some much needed game time.  The game was cut short by 20 minutes due to a serious looking neck injury to an East Berkshire player, which in the end was all clear.  Performance Coach Ben Coulson was happy with the way Worthing conducted themselves.  “The lads kept going today, which was great to see.  They continued to pressurise East Berkshire, which ensured such a one sided outcome.  However there is still plenty to work on when I looked at the video, but this result will give the players great confidence going into the new year.”

The Basketball Performance Programme took on local rivals Chichester in the BCS National Cup Round 2.  Chichester rushed Worthing from the start, which forced Worthing into many unforced errors, which allowed Chichester to pick up some easy points.  However Worthing pulled themselves together and with Elliot Winfield stepping up in his first start of the season both in attack and defence, as well as Arthur Holt picking up 10 points from the bench led Worthing to an eventual 86-61 victory.  Performance Coach Dom Baker praised his side but warned “the players have two key practices to work on points that we need to develop for the next round, which is away to Brockehurst next week” (19th December)
