Women’s Football Performance Programme – 14.11.12

Worthing came up against a strong chelsea side with plenty to play for both sides. The game started at a high tempo with Chelsea playing high in Worthings half. Worthing responded well playing some nice football of their own and pressing the ball well all over the pitch. Amy Green was providing a out let to all players in the Worthing side in her role as holding midfield.
Becky Simmonds nearly broke the deadlock when she beat the Chelsea keeper to a loose ball only for her attempt to be cleared by the covering defender. Soon after this the deadlock was broken by a superb goal by Green after she danced past a couple of defenders and curling the ball into the far corner from 20 yards out. 1-0 Worthing after 20 minutes fully deserved with the energy and effort put in. With this Chelsea started to knock the ball round with more tempo and Worthing where struggling to cope with the midfield runners. Natalie Woolven twice bring brought into the action with good saves. But the pressure was starting to tell on the Worthing back four, finally a break through for Chelsea came and a second was quick to follow. 2-1 to Chelsea and Worthing where reeling with 10 minutes to go till half time.
Chelsea went to kill the game off but some solid defending managed to keep worthing in the game till an unfortunate 3rd came just before half time.
3-1 half time and in danger of Chelsea running away with the game.
Worthing started the 2nd half well looking calmer in possession and competing well all over the pitch, but disaster struck when Jade Widdows had the ball stolen off her on the half way line and Chelsea broke to score a 4th. This could have broken Worthing who to their credit rolled up their sleeves and dragged themselves back into the game. Substitute Paige Adams nearly scored a 2nd for Worthing when she got in behind the defence only to see he placed shot go agonisingly wide of the left hand post. This seemed to give worthing more confidence and they started to increase the pressure on Chelsea. Adams wasn’t to be denied when she went through again the keeper making a fine 1st save but picking on the 2nds and blasting the ball into the roof of the net.
4-2 with 15 minutes to go Worthing felt they might just get back into the game but never managed to break down the solid Chelsea team. 4-2 to Chelsea at full time no disgrace for Worthing but if they had competed in the middle part of the game could have got so much more.
